XJTU students win the Outstanding Winner Award of the American Mathematical Contest In Modeling for Undergraduates

The results of 2021 Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) were announced on April 24. Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) students won one Outstanding Winner Award (the highest award), 13 Finalist Awards (the second high award), 36 Meritorious Winner Awards, 88 Honorable Mentions and one AMS Award. The school has won an Outstanding Winner Award for four consecutive years.

The competition attracted 26,112 teams, including 10,053 in MCM and 16,059 in ICM, from universities in the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries and regions including Oxford University, the College of William and Mary, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi'an Jiaotong University. There were 36 Outstanding Winners Awards and 21 AMS Awards.

The Mathematical Contest in Modeling for Undergraduates (MCM/ICM) is sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Application.MCM is the only and also the most influential international mathematical modeling competition in the world. 

The competition covers a wide range of topics in economics, management, the environment, resources, ecology, medicine, security, and many other fields. It requires a team of three undergraduates to work on a given problem for four days, from modeling, solving and validating to writing a paper, testing the participants' ability to research the problem, solve it, and work as a team.

The Mathematical Contest in Modeling for Undergraduates includes both a National Competition and an American Competition and has the largest number of participants and the widest range of majors among disciplinary competitions at XJTU, so it is of great significance to the cultivation of practical innovation ability in undergraduates. 

Under the direct leadership of the university and with organization provided by the Practice and Teaching Center and the School of Mathematics and Statistics, participating teams having ability in mathematical modeling were gathered and trained for the competition.

At the same time, 17 experienced faculty advisors from several related schools were selected to form a joint coaching team to guide the participating teams one by one. In the end, a total of 288 teams and 864 students submitted papers.

The achievement in this competition fully reflects that the university has taken the competition of college students' disciplines and science and technology as the project driver to cultivate students' innovation and entrepreneurship ability, and has made continuous efforts to generate innovation and entrepreneurship as part of a sophisticated educational ecosystem.
