The concert examined the relationship of arts with science. The concert was delivered in a special fashion. Professor Guan Xiaohong, Yangtze River Chaired Professor of System Engineering and Dean of School of Electronic and Information Engineering, was the chief planner.Professor Guan interpreted in fluent English together with Yang Xi, a young scholar of Xi’an Conservatory of Music, introducing the relationship of arts with science and the impact of artistic logic upon scientific thinking.

The concert was performed by the chamber music Band of Xi’an Conservatory of Music and conducted by the young conductor Hou Jie. The band performed the famous music pieces from Chapter 1, Bach’s Double violin concerto in D minor, the baroque and classical music masterpieces. Professor Guan demonstrated in an academic fashion the melody changes of the music pieces followed the same mathematic and physical laws as the earthquake intensity, webpage linkage, solar flare intensity, mutually interacting protein matching, and social network fans etc did, i.e., the inverse accumulated probability followed the power law of the power function.

Professor Guan Xiaohong staged a flute duet, the Flower Duet, together with Professor Gao Qinping of Xi’an Conservatory of Music, The piece was selected from Lakme, which described the stories on the Silk Road in a distinctive oriental style. The collaborative performance by a scientist and an artist highlighted the theme of the concert, the bridge between arts and science. The elegant and romantic melodies left the audience enchanted, while the great collaborative performance by scientist and artist earned wide applause and acclaims from the audience.

The serial concert A Bridge between Arts and Science was initiated by XJTU scientists and artists of Xi’an Conservatory of Music in 2012. It has been staged at Tsinghua University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnic University, Xidian University, Shaanxi Normal University, and Xi’an Conservatory of Music on different occasions. Many faculty and students claimed that attending such a concert bridging science and arts helped to broaden the thinking, enrich the knowledge and foster scientific and artistic inquires, hoping more innovations could show on the concert to explore scientific and artistic combinations. In addition, faculty and students from XJTU and Xi’an Conservatory of Music has formed up a research team on science and arts cross-disciplinary studies. Currently the team is studying the theoretical basis of power-law relation in the classical music and the information processing-based musical instrument tonic analysis etc.
