NEU Professor Wang Shenpei Named XJTU Guest Professor

Wang Shenpei, tenure-track professor of the School Computer and Information Science, Northeastern University (NEU), alumni of National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan visited XJTU from Nov. 20th to 22nd. On the Morning of Nov. 21st, Vice President Xi Guang met Professor Wang in Science Hall 107 and appointed him as XJTU guest professor.

In the afternoon, Professor Wang Shenpei delivered a speech entitled "The Humanity Care of Science and Technology, and Career Development" to the young talents who are enrolled in specially designed classes of XJTU. He considers that humanity care facilitates the competitiveness building for students' career development. It is also beneficial for keeping social stability and revival of the nationhood. Liberal arts education will help people in the process of internationalization and appropriate humanity care makes students more knowledgeable and open-minded. Humanity Care recognizes the existence of human beings, their values, develops their potentialities and supports them with quite balanced personalities. Professor Wang hoped that college students would combine science and technology with humanity, broaden horizons, be adaptable and able to resolve all kinds of problems. A Q&A session followed the speech during which students actively interacted with Professor Wang.

On the afternoon of 22nd, Prof. Wang participated in an academic discussion with Professor Zheng Nanning, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, his colleagues and students of Artificial Intelligence Robot Research Institute of XJTU.

Professor Wang graduated from National Chiao Tung University with a bachelor degree in electronic engineering and then got his two masters in National Taiwan University and Georgia Institute of Technology respectively in electrical machinery engineering, and information and computer science. He then obtained his doctor degree in computer philosophy in Oregon State University. Currently, Professor Wang serves as a tenure-track professor of NEU, senior advisor of MIT, part-time professor of Harvard University and guest professor of Magdeburg University. In 2007, Professor Wang was awarded High Achievement Prize of IEEE-SMC. He is also the founder and chief editor of the Journal of International Mode Distinction and Artificial Intelligence.

Professor Wang's speech numbered the 24th alumni speech in 2014. It unveiled series of alumnus activities designed for the 120th anniversary for the establishment of XJTU and the 60th anniversary for XJTU westward movement from Shanghai to Xi'an.
