The 2014 Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics (CSET) annual meeting was held in Xi'an from October 31 to November 2. The meeting was hosted by CSET and undertaken by XJTU School of Energy and Power Engineering. The attendees included many academicians and over 2500 experts and scholars from universities and research institutions home and abroad.

On the morning of November 1, the opening ceremony was held in the Grand Hall of Shaanxi Hotel. The chairman of the CSET academician Xu Jianzhong, president of XJTU Wang Shuguo, vice director of the Department of Engineering and Material Science of the National Natural Science Fund Li Ming and vice president of the Research Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences Zhu Junqiang attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was chaired by the secretary general of the CSET academician Jin Hongguang.

The meeting consisted of three parts: opening ceremony and specially invited speeches, group meeting speeches and seminars. Four famous research scholars delivered specially invited speeches. They were Academician Xu Jianzhong from the Research Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor Noam Lior from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics of American University of Pennsylvania, academician C.K.Law from the Department of Machinery and Aerospace Engineering of American Princeton University and researcher Wang Zhongying from the Research Institute of Energy Resource of NDRC. The speeches were respectively entitled "Aviation Engine and Engineering Thermophysics" ,"Sustainable Energy Development: The Present (2014) Situation and Needed Heat Transfer and Thermodynamic Foundations", "Advancing Combustion as a Transdisciplinary Thermal Science" and "Chinese Energy Resource Revolution must choose the renewable energy resource road that leaps over Oil and Gas".

The meeting had 6 breakout rooms, 106 seminars and got 2208 papers. The attendees discussed and exchanged their ideas on the basic, edge-cutting and hotspot problems on engineering thermophysics and energy resource use discipline and the application problems that were closely related to the construction of the national economy.

CSET National Member Meeting was also held, during which the work report and financial report of the 6th CSET committee board were discussed and evaluated. The major leaders and members of the 7th committee board and standing committee board were also elected.

The excellent papers selected from the fields of heat and mass transfer science, combustion science and multiphase flow were awarded "Excellent Paper Prize" in the closing ceremony on November 2nd.

The meeting also covered the main progresses achieved by engineering thermophysics and educational teaching in face of the significant demands of China, the important results and new discipline growth. A series of seminars such as the Strategic Seminar on the Development Frontier Growth of Engineering Thermophysics, the Special Topic Seminar on Internal Flow and Discipline Planning Seminar were held, which pointed out the direction for future development of the discipline.

CSET was founded in 1978. It was set up by Chinese outstanding engineering thermophysicist Wu Zhonghua. It is affiliated to the Research Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Now, there are more than 5000 members. It covers 4 discipline including engineering thermodynamics and energy resource use, pneumatic thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer science and combustion science. Two special committees: multiphase flow and fluid machinery are also included. The Journal of Engineering Thermophysics jointly compiled by the CSET and the Research Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences is the top magazine of China in the field. It is evaluated as the excellent periodical by China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences many times.
