MANILA -- The Asia and Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction 2024 will highlight the use of satellites, drones and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance disaster prediction, preparedness and response, the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources said.

"As climate change intensifies disaster risks, integrating technologies like AI and space-based systems into our disaster risk reduction strategies is vital for a safer, more resilient future," the agency's Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga said Tuesday.

The event is a biennial one convened by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. The Philippines will host this year's event from Oct. 14 to 18.

In August, the office warned that disasters in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to increase 40 percent by 2030, stressing the urgency to accelerate collective action on disaster risk reduction.

The World Internet Conference (WIC) was established as an international organization on July 12, 2022, headquartered in Beijing, China. It was jointly initiated by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA), National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), Alibaba Group, Tencent, and Zhijiang Lab.
