    During the War of Liberation (1946-49), 15-year-old Liu Hulan was brutally killed by a Kuomintang guillotine because of her loyalty to the Communist Party of China (CPC). In order to commemorate her, former CPC leader Mao Zedong inscribed Liu as "a great life, a glorious death". In 2009, Liu was named one of the 100 heroes who made outstanding contributions to the founding of new China.

    杨连第（1919～1952），天津市北仓镇人，中国人民志愿军一级战斗英雄。1951年，在修复陇海铁路8号高桥时，杨连弟机智勇敢地攀上40多米高的桥墩，提前完成修桥任务，荣获“登高英雄”的光荣称号。1952年5月15日，杨连弟被敌机投下的定时炸弹弹片击中头部，光荣牺牲，时年33岁。作者/来源：网信天津

    Yang Liandi, a native of Tianjin, was awarded the title of First Class Hero because of his achievements during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea . In 1951, when repairing a bridge, Yang bravely climbed over 40 meters high, and completed his task ahead of schedule. A year later, Yang, just 33 years old, was hit in the head by shrapnel from a bomb, and died from his injuries.
