Jiangmen city of Guangdong province is known as the "city of overseas Chinese" in China. In recent years, the People's Procuratorate of Jiangmen City has been working to protect the rights and interests of overseas Chinese, strengthen the protection of their cultural relics, and solve disputes related to them.
They also supervised the protection of the Wuyi Diaolou structures, which were built with the financial aid of overseas Chinese from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to the early 20th century. Diaolou display a fusion of Chinese and Western structural and decorative forms, and in 2007, Kaiping Diaolou and Villages were designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In January 2022, the People's Procuratorate of Xinhui District, Jiangmen, found that the Meige Pier had foundation settlement and cracking problems while conducting a public interest litigation on cultural relics. The Meige Pier was funded and built by overseas Chinese. Together with the procurators, the local government actively pushed forward the repair and maintenance work, and raised more than 1.6 million yuan ($222,250) of funds among overseas Chinese.
In November 2023, the repair of the Meige Pier was completed. It made Jiang Kangrong, President of Kong Chow Benevolent Association and a Xinhui native who lives in San Francisco, very excited, and he sent a "Qiaopi" to the People's Procuratorate of Xinhui District, through which he expressed his nostalgia and gratitude to the local officials.
