The Taiyuan municipal government's work report was unveiled at the fifth plenary session of the 15th Taiyuan Municipal People's Congress, which commenced on Feb 25 in Taiyuan, capital of North China's Shanxi province.
The report highlights Taiyuan's impressive achievements in 2024, including the city's ranking on the World Cities list, published by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, surging from 223rd in 2020 to 139th in 2024. The Global Yearly Brand Institute also reported that Taiyuan secured the 40th spot among China's Top 100 Cities.
In 2024, Taiyuan's investment in industrial sectors grew by 24.7 percent year over year, the highest in the province. The number of key provincial industrial chain enterprises reached 186, generating business revenue of 227.5 billion yuan ($31.22 billion), positioning Taiyuan at Shanxi’s forefront.
Taiyuan also advanced its development as a national comprehensive freight hub. Eight China-Europe Express routes are in operation, 10 flight routes are managed by Taiyuan Airlines, and four cross-border e-commerce business models are under development.
Taiyuan actively engaged in cultural and economic exchanges with countries such as Greece, Turkiye, France, Germany, and Hungary, added one new international sister city, and established friendly cooperation partnerships with three additional cities.
In 2024, the city allocated 78.9 percent of its fiscal expenditure to ensure the wellbeing of its citizens. It created 89,000 new urban jobs, constructed 30,200 government-subsidized rental houses, and initiated the construction of 6,003 affordable government-subsidized homes.
