Taiyuan Gong and Drum is a popular folk percussion performance in Taiyuan city and parts of Jinzhong and Lyuliang cities.

The performance style was systematically formed in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), while its rhythm can be traced back to before the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC).

The performances are mainly characterized by the use of cymbals, gongs and drums. People dance to sharp rhythms, using vigorous, masculine movements while beating the musical instruments.

Local cultural elements from Shanxi province characterize the majestic art shows. They are mainly staged during festivals or ceremonies, being an important part of people's cultural lives in Taiyuan city and its surrounding areas.

It is a traditional folk custom for two groups of performers to compete with each other during some celebrations.

In 2008, the performance of Taiyuan Gong and Drum was included in the list of China's national intangible cultural heritage items.
