China saw a growing number of international participants in marathons, trail runs, and cycling events during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, including international students and expatriates living in China, as well as sports enthusiasts traveling specifically from abroad.
Nearly 100 foreign runners from 12 countries and regions participated in this year's Taiyuan Marathon in Shanxi province, a number that has steadily increased each year.
"Various sports events are becoming a window for many foreigners to gain a deeper understanding and experience of China," said Cheng Minduo, a professor at Shanxi University's School of Physical Education. "This trend of 'sports tourism' is gaining popularity among some foreign groups."
Making new friends is another major attraction for foreigners participating in these events. A few days ago, Yang Yang, a Yemeni student at North University of China, participated in a 10-kilometer trail run in Linfen's Anze county with his classmates.
"During the race, I chatted with fellow runners, took photos with them, and even exchanged WeChat contacts," he said. "I have traveled to many places, but this experience was unique and left a deep impression on me."
On the day of the Anze trail run, the organizers set up traditional performances like drum shows and lion dances along the route. Cultural and agricultural product exhibitions also left a lasting impression on Ma Lu, a Tajikistani student. "It was my first time watching Chinese folk arts up close. It was fascinating, and it deepened my interest in Chinese traditional culture."
