Shanxi's new energy storage capacity surpasses 5 million kW
Updated: 2026-09-29
Shanxi province has achieved a significant milestone in its new energy storage capacity, surpassing 5 million kilowatts as of the end of July, with 90 new energy storage stations now connected to the grid.
The province's wind and photovoltaic power generation capacity had reached 80.61 million kW by the end of June, with projections to expand to 178 million kW by 2030, while its new energy storage capacity is expected to exceed 8 million kW by 2027, driving direct investments of over 10 billion yuan ($1.49 billion).
State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Co has introduced several service initiatives to support the development of new energy storage, releasing the nation's first provincial-level development guide for new energy storage and prioritizing the strategic placement of storage facilities near 500 kV substations to ensure scientifically guided development.
A multi-party coordination mechanism has been established to streamline approval processes, expedite substation upgrades, and ensure timely grid connections for storage projects. Shanxi Electric Power has also integrated new energy storage and other regulating resources into its daily management system, significantly enhancing grid reliability and operational safety.
During peak electricity demand on July 23, the company coordinated a large-scale deployment of storage stations and virtual power plants across the province, demonstrating the practical capabilities of these adjustable grid resources.
