Shanxi unveils ambitious 'Expansive Landscape Scenic Road' project
Updated: 2026-01-13
In the next five years, Shanxi province plans to transform 13,000 kilometers of its "No 1 Tourist Highways" into an "Expansive Landscape Scenic Road", a project designed to showcase the province's breathtaking beauty.
This initiative aims to effectively connect A-level and above tourist attractions and key tourism resources, creating a new development model that integrates cultural tourism with leisure, wellness, and sightseeing.
According to the "Shanxi Province's Development Plan for the Yellow River, Great Wall, and Taihang No 1 Tourist Highways and Cultural Tourism Integration (2026-2030)", the safety, convenience, and intelligence of these roads are expected to reach national advanced levels.
The plan outlines a task list for creating new cross-regional and cross-provincial experiences, highlighting three distinctive experience zones: the Western Zone featuring natural wonders and folk culture, the Central Zone showcasing the Fenhe Valley and Shanxi merchants' culture, and the Eastern Zone focusing on geological marvels and ancient villages.
Shanxi will also establish four themed corridors: the Northern Military Culture Corridor, the Central Mountain Sports and Ecological Wellness Corridor, the Western Yellow River Civilization Corridor, and the Southeastern Taihang Mountains and Red Culture Corridor.
The province aims to build a comprehensive development system that integrates transportation and tourism, commercializes highway tourism, enhances transport and tourism functions, differentiates scenic areas, and shares tourism resources.
