Since 2020, under the national "double carbon" strategy, North China's Shanxi province has made use of its resource to vigorously develop clean energy. The province has embarked on an energy transformation journey by developing the hydrogen energy industry.

"Shanxi's focus on the hydrogen energy industry is a strategic decision based on its resource advantages, industrial structure, practical needs, application foundation, and development potential," said an official from the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Shanxi Province. "In the context of peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, entering the hydrogen energy sector and accelerating the establishment of a new energy structure are key to Shanxi's high-quality and comprehensive transformation."

Such being the case, hydrogen energy has been an important topic at the Taiyuan Energy Low Carbon Development Forum (TELC) in recent years. The 2023 TELC revealed that Shanxi's hydrogen energy industry development index stood at 285.05, ranking second among major hydrogen development regions in China.

Industrial parks and mining areas in Taiyuan, Linfen, Lyuliang, Yangquan, and Changzhi are currently utilizing hydrogen and other industrial by-products to advance the transformation and upgrading of the transportation, coking, chemical, and chlor-alkali industries, all without increasing carbon emissions.

Meanwhile, Shanxi is accelerating the development of hydrogen infrastructure and application scenarios, particularly in industrial parks, steel smelting, modern farms, and specialized transportation.

By 2025, Shanxi aims to establish a comprehensive hydrogen industrial chain, injecting momentum into the high-quality development of the hydrogen energy industry and the low-carbon transformation of Shanxi's energy sector.
