North China's Shanxi province is prioritizing the development of the hydrogen energy industry as a key driver for high-quality economic growth and green, low-carbon energy transformation. This commitment has led to significant progress in recent years.

The province's hydrogen energy industrial chain currently comprises 31 enterprises, including leading companies like Meijin Energy, Jinnan Steel, and Pengfei Group. In 2023, the industrial chain's total revenue reached 50.25 billion yuan ($6.91 billion), a year-on-year increase of 32.2 percent.

According to the Shanxi Hydrogen Energy Industry Development Index released during the 2023 Taiyuan Energy Low-Carbon Development Forum, the province's comprehensive index for hydrogen energy development ranked second among the major regions seeking hydrogen energy development in China, significantly exceeding the national average.

In 2023, Shanxi constructed and put into operation 22 hydrogen refueling stations, significantly boosting the use of hydrogen in the logistics sector. Industrial parks and mining areas in cities like Taiyuan, Linfen, Yangquan, and Changzhi are actively utilizing industrial byproducts to drive the transformation and upgrading of transportation, coking, chemical, and chlor-alkali industries, ensuring no new carbon emissions are generated.

Meanwhile, Shanxi is accelerating the deployment of hydrogen energy infrastructure and developing various application scenarios, revolving around industrial parks, steel smelting, modern farms, and specialized transport. These efforts aim to achieve the efficient and large-scale utilization of hydrogen resources.
