Shanxi province recently issued a plan to curb peak industrial carbon emissions in industry.
The province will first embark on two major actions to ensure carbon emissions are now at their peak in key industries – meaning they will not worsen – while also improving the supply of green and low-carbon products.
It will formulate carbon-peaking implementation plans for the steel, building materials, coking, chemicals, and non-ferrous metals sectors, and carry out research on low-carbon development paths in consumer goods, equipment manufacturing, and electronics sectors.
In terms of the iron and steel industry, for example, Shanxi will accelerate the upgrading and transformation of restricted process equipment, promote the application of low-carbon metallurgy technology, and increase the proportion of high-performance special steel and products with long life and corrosion resistance.
As for the chemical industry, the province will eliminate any outdated processing technology and production devices that do not meet the requirements of the province's low-carbon transformation strategy.
In terms of the supply of low-carbon products, Shanxi plans to improve the design, development and promotion mechanism, and provide high-quality products for the energy production, transportation, urban and rural construction fields based on the development of photovoltaics, semiconductors, hydrogen energy, and new materials industrial chains, while also developing a low-carbon product supply system.
