North China's Shanxi province has made major contributions to low-carbon development in the country and throughout the world over the past decade.

The province has promoted an increase in coal production capacity. Especially last year, faced with a shortage in the global energy supply, the province increased coal production by 113 million metric tons, power generation by 8.9 percent year-on-year, and unconventional natural gas output by 16.6 percent, ensuring national energy safety. 

The first 10 national intelligent coal mines, 20 coal mines featuring green mining, and 328 intelligent coal mining faces in the province have been completed, making the proportion of advanced coal production capacity exceed 75 percent.

Shanxi has boosted new comprehensive energy sources, promoted the low-carbon transformation of coal-fired power generation, furthered the clean and efficient use of coal, and accelerated the construction of new energy and renewable energy projects. 

For instance, pumping power stations in Yuanqu county in the city of Yuncheng and Hunyuan county in the city of Datong have started construction, and eight pumping storage projects in the province have been rated as national key projects during the 14th Five -Year Plan period (2021-25).

In addition, the province has expanded international cooperation in the energy field.

The province has held the Taiyuan Energy Low Carbon Development Forum annually since 2016, providing a platform for high-end dialogue between countries, achievement release and international cooperation in the energy sector.

Over the past years, Shanxi has helped adjust the global energy structure and make breakthroughs in energy technology.
