Shanxi, a major energy hub in North China, has been promoting the optimal combination of traditional energy and new energy in recent years, and has achieved new results in green and low-carbon development.

The coal-rich province has continued to improve the quality of the energy supply. It produced 1.19 billion metric tons of coal in 2021, accounting for 29.2 percent of the national total, and guaranteed the energy supplies of 16 provinces in the country.

The proportion of advanced coal production capacity has exceeded 75 percent, among the highest in the country.

Shanxi has accelerated the intelligent development of coal mines by introducing artificial intelligence, 5G communications, and big data technologies. Ten national demonstrative coal mines have been built and 24 coal mines have had access to the 5G network. In 2022, 20 coal mines in the province have piloted eco-friendly mining techniques and applications.

Wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, and hydrogen energy have been boosted in the province, speeding up the construction of pumped hydro energy storage and electrochemical energy storage projects.

As of the end of June, the province's new energy installed capacity had reached 40.12 million kilowatts, accounting for 34.46 percent of the total installed capacity.

Shanxi has also accelerated the construction of a green energy consumption system. The province has improved energy conservation and efficiency in the industrial field, promoted energy-saving technology products, implemented coal consumption control, and furthered the clean heating supply in winter.

Breakthroughs in energy technology have been made as well. The province has formed steel-coke-chemical-hydrogen, coal-coke-chemical-hydrogen, and coal-coke-fine chemical industrial chains and made breakthroughs in hydrogen energy, sodium batteries, energy internet, and the comprehensive utilization of coal gangue.
