North University of China is a multi-disciplinary teaching and research university jointly established by Shanxi Provincial People's Government and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND). It is managed by Shanxi Provincial People's Government. 

The predecessor of the university was the first military school of Party-Taihang Industrial School. It was renamed North University of China by the Ministry of Education in June 2004.

North University of China is located in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, and it has a campus in Shuozhou city. It covers an area of more than 183 hectares with a floorage area measuring 101 hectares. 

The university has fixed assets of nearly 2.76 billion yuan ($431.37 million). It has complete teaching and public service facilities, with its teaching and scientific research facilities worth 700 million yuan. A total of 3.6 million Chinese and foreign books are available in the university's library.

It has a complete education system of 16 specialized colleges as well as professional education institutes such as a graduate college, a defense education college, and an international education college. And it has a complete specialty system with many key national and provincial specialties, including defense studies offered by SASTIND. 

The university also offers its employees the opportunity to also study for qualifications if they are suitably qualified. 

There are 2,426 staff members and some of them are national or provincial outstanding professionals, such as national outstanding youth and national excellent teachers. There are also some provincial leading talents, professors and experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, as well as experts from SASTIND and the General Armament Department.

The university promotes open education, strives to build international partnerships, and conducts exchanges and cooperation with more than 100 universities, international companies and research institutes around the world.
