The first Chinese-built new energy locomotive started operating in the city of Zibo, located in East China's Shandong province, on July 6.
The locomotive, which was originally a Dongfeng 5 internal combustion engine locomotive, has been refurbished and transformed into a lithium-ion battery-powered new energy locomotive.
It can be used for at least 15 to 20 years and has a much lower electricity operating cost compared with diesel fuel, saving the equivalent of over 100 metric tons of diesel fuel per year and reducing carbon emissions.
