Shandong athletes won a total of seven gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, their best-ever performance at the Games. Shandong fielded 49 athletes this year, more than any other province in China both in terms of the number of participants and events.
Six athletes from Zibo city attended the Games. Yang Junxuan won the gold with her teammates Tang Muhan, Zhang Yufei and Li Bingjie and set a world record in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay swimming event and won the silver in the mixed 4x100m medley relay swimming event.
Xu Xiaoyan, one of the Chinese women's rugby sevens team, made history by finishing seventh after beating the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) 22-10.
Other Zibo athletes included Lu Yiwen for water polo, Ma Zhenzhao for judo and Zhong Mengying for triathlon.
