Taiqian subdistrict in Tai'an turns idle resources into cultural tourism hubs
Taiqian subdistrict in Taishan district, Tai'an in Shandong province has embraced a "Taishan Mountain+" development model, integrating cultural tourism with rural vitalization.
Leveraging its prime location at the foot of Taishan Mountain, the area has cultivated over 110 dining venues and 43 boutique homestays — including two national-level and six provincial-level certified properties — welcoming more than 400,000 visitors annually.
To enhance connectivity, the subdistrict upgraded a 15-kilimeter scenic road with 15 new viewing platforms and art installations, turning old routes into popular attractions. Six villages have undergone full renovation, with improved roads, lighting, and greenery.
Unused infrastructure has been repurposed into unique projects: Baimashi village transformed old schools and factories into new cultural tourism hubs; Shangyu village developed the "Taishan Homestay" agritourism complex; and Shuiniubu village built a revolutionary-themed industrial park and night market.
Local culture has also been woven into the experience. To bring traditions to life, distinctive mascots and characters have been created — including a pomegranate-inspired figure, a legendary horse, and other local symbols — along with cultural products such as pomegranate drinks, tie-dye clothing, and blessing pendants.
Talent development has become a key driver of cultural tourism growth. The district's youth innovation hub offers free spaces for startups, with revenue-sharing models that cut costs. Over 6,000 students have joined rural practice programs, bringing fresh energy to local cultural tourism.
