Grain security base commences operations in Qingdao WCNA

chinadaily.com.cn| Updated: January 14, 2026

The provincial-level regional grain security emergency response base in Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA) is now in trial operations. As one of Shandong province's four major regional grain security hubs, this facility is a significant advancement in the region's ability to safeguard its food supply.

Built under an integrated warehousing and distribution model, the base includes two emergency warehouses totaling 16,800 square meters. By using a multi-layer automated vertical storage system, the facility increases storage density by three to five times compared to traditional warehouses. It currently holds 15,000 metric tons of small-packaged flour, rice, and peanut oil, which are staples ready for immediate market release. This supply can meet the consumption needs of 4 million people for about 10 days.

To ensure rapid logistics during emergencies, the hub is equipped with advanced technologies such as intelligent shuttles, vertical elevators, and high-rack stackers. These tools enable fully intelligent operations with a combined handling capacity of 400 tons per hour. Efficiency is further enhanced by WMS and WCS management systems, along with a digital twin platform, allowing for remote-controlled processing and precise tracking of all goods for maximum reliability.

Looking ahead, the project will leverage its reserves and integrate with the Qingdao WCNA's commercial distribution and logistics networks. By adopting a model of centralized procurement and large-scale turnover, the base will meet both daily supply needs and emergency demands. This dual-purpose strategy aims to enhance regional grain regulation and response efficiency, providing greater public welfare and social stability.
