KingAgroot joins national key laboratory network for bio-breeding

chinadaily.com.cn| Updated: January 12, 2026

KingAgroot CropScience, a leading company in the Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA), has been designated as a Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs' Key Laboratory of Crop Biological Breeding and New Variety Cultivation.

This makes three ministry-level enterprise key laboratories in the Qingdao WCNA, the most in Qingdao.

These national R&D platforms are designed to make leading agricultural firms tech innovation centers. By mixing industrial research with product development, the labs aim to break core agricultural tech barriers and speed up the process of turning scientific achievements into real-world uses.

Started in 2009, KingAgroot focuses on green pesticides and biotech breeding. It's now the fifth-largest crop science R&D team in the world, with a full tech loop from finding new compounds to developing new germplasms.

Importantly, the company has its own intellectual property rights for key gene-editing technologies, such as the "KingCas12 gene scissors", which give China's seed industry greater security.

Looking ahead, Qingdao WCNA will keep focusing on seed revitalization and high-quality agricultural development. By supporting key laboratories in green farming and top seed development, the area plans to influence the industry. This strategy is set to lead the agricultural sector toward a high-end, intelligent, and green transformation, creating a "West Coast Model" for national agricultural modernization.
