Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA) is enhancing the fusion of "sports plus" and forging a new path for the integration of culture, tourism, and sports.
On April 6, the starting gun fired for the 2025 West Coast Half Marathon. This year marks the eighth time the event has been held in the area, with participation growing from under a thousand initially to a remarkable 15,000 people this year.
To make the event more unique, organizers decided to showcase local agricultural products and intangible cultural heritage items at the 2024 marathon – a move that was well-received. This year, organizers not only continued these highlights but also promoted unique tourist routes on-site. All participants can enjoy complimentary or discounted visits to major tourist attractions in the region with their race certificates.
In recent years, high-profile sporting events like rowing and the Qingdao Fashion Sports Festival have been held in the area. Leveraging the impact of these events, Qingdao WCNA has been proactively expanding "sports plus tourism", "sports plus shopping", "sports plus night market", and other "sports plus" consumer experiences. For instance, near the home stadium of the Qingdao West Coast team in the Chinese Football Super League, a vibrant night market has been established. Since its launch in March 2024, the market has welcomed a total of 1.68 million visitors.
In 2024, Qingdao WCNA hosted over 80 sporting events with a cumulative participation of more than 300,000 individuals, generating over 150 million yuan ($20.5 million) in consumption revenue.
