Construction of the Qingdao University (QU) Medical Center in Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA) commenced on June 7.

The project is part of the city's three-year urban renewal and construction plan.

Situated in the Wangtai old industrial zone, the QU Medical Center will cover an area of approximately 1,113 mu (74.2 hectares) and be constructed over two phases.

The first phase, spanning about 118 mu and costing 4.5 billion yuan ($631 million), includes the QU-affiliated Cardiovascular Hospital and Stomatology Hospital. This phase is expected to be completed by 2026.

The second phase, comprising five colleges, including the QU School of Basic Medical Sciences, the School of Stomatology, and the School of Public Health, and 22 research institutes spread over 598 mu, is expected to be completed in 2030.

The project aims to bolster the enhancement and expansion of high-quality medical resources in the Qingdao WCNA, facilitate resource distribution, and expedite the transformation of the Wangtai old industrial area. The medical center will also play a role in supporting the development of the advanced chip and flat panel display industries in the region.
