The 7th John Moores Painting Prize (China) Exhibition opened on May 20 at TAG Art Museum in Qingdao West Coast New Area (Qingdao WCNA). It is a collaborative event involving the British foundation behind the prize, Shanghai Powerlong Museum, and the museum itself.

Launched in 1957, the John Moores Painting Prize has remained at the forefront of British painting for well over six decades, enjoying strong international acclaim.

This celebrated competition made its debut in Qingdao, a picturesque coastal city, offering local artists a stage to engage with global culture and art, while also providing enthusiasts a glimpse into the evolution of contemporary art.

The exhibition not only features this year's winners and shortlisted works, but also encourages interaction between audience members and the artists who won through panels and forums, deepening understanding of the creative methodologies of the nominees.

Over a thousand applicants vied for a spot in the exhibition after the October 2022 submission deadline. Following multiple rounds of selection by esteemed international jurors, 118 artists were shortlisted. Notably, five artists hailing from the 1980s generation from across the nation triumphed, clinching the coveted "John Moores Painting Prize (China) Excellence Award".

The exhibition's opening ceremony was a two-fold affair, comprising on-site exchanges and a forum featuring the winning artists, with the entire event live-streamed for virtual attendees.
