A neighborhood in Hedong district, Linyi city, Shandong province is using culture, volunteer services and physical fitness activities to strengthen community ties and create a more civilized local society.

Lijiazhuang community in Jiuqu subdistrict has transformed its shared public spaces into gathering places where residents can take part in daily fitness, reading, cultural activities and volunteer programs. At a recent morning exercise session, more than 50 senior residents joined a hand-movement workout, including a participant who continued practicing after recovering from a stroke.

"Life feels much brighter now that I can exercise and spend time with my neighbors," resident Peng said, describing how regular activities like these have improved both health and community spirit.

Community workers have also incorporated public services into major family occasions. Staff help decorate wedding ceremonies, while new homeowners receive festive decorations and poetic couplets to celebrate moving into the neighborhood. Officials say these small gestures have encouraged more interaction among residents.

The community has also expanded its public cultural facilities, including a 200-square-meter activity center with reading, fitness and recreation areas, while an outdoor cultural corridor showcases local history, family traditions and model households. Volunteer teams also provide regular home visits, health checks and companionship for elderly residents.

Through year-round activities ranging from Mother's Day celebrations to Father's Day card games and community performances, Lijiazhuang has sought to make neighborhood participation a part of everyday life, helping turn community culture into a lasting foundation for stronger civic engagement.
