The construction of a large-scale and high-altitude wind power project began in Laba Mountain of Dechang, a county of Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture in Southwest China's Sichuan province, on June 7.

It is one of the country's first batch of large-scale wind and photovoltaic power bases, a landmark and demonstration project for the production of green, clean and renewable energy featuring the complementation of water, wind and photovoltaic power in the Yalong River basin, and the largest wind power project under construction during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) in Sichuan.

Constructed by Chengdu Engineering Corporation of POWERCHINA, the project has an installed capacity of 192,000 kilowatts and is planned to build 60 wind turbines.

Chengdu Engineering Corporation will fully leverage its technologies, talents, managerial strength and construction experience to press ahead with the wind power project and deliver outstanding performance to residents in the autonomous prefecture.

The wind power project is scheduled to install its first wind turbine this October and will be formally put into operation and connected to the grid in September 2023. After its completion, it will generate 501 million kilowatt-hours of clean power every year, sufficient for the annual electricity consumption of approximately 210,000 households, save about 160,000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 400,000 tons for Sichuan per year.

According to China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) on the development of renewable energy, with a prospective installed capacity of 80 million kilowatts, the Yalong River basin will become a green, clean and renewable energy demonstration base where water, wind and photovoltaic power complement each other. It is expected to build wind and photovoltaic power projects with an installed capacity of 40 million kilowatts and hydropower stations with an installed capacity of 10 million kilowatts.

After their completion, the Yalong River basin will be one of the largest bases for the production of green, clean and renewable energy in the world.
