The third generator unit of the Ruzibazi Hydropower Station Project in Southwest Burundi's Rumonge province was formally put into a trial operation on June 5, marking the completion of the largest China-aided overseas hydropower station.
Located in the lower reaches of the Ruzibazi River in southern Bujumbura, capital of Burundi, and with an install capacity of 15,000 kilowatts, Ruzibazi Hydropower Station was designed by Zhongnan Engineering Corporation and built by Sinohydro Bureau 14 Co LTD. Both of them are subsidiaries of POWERCHINA.
In addition, Chengdu Engineering Corporation and China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute, another two subsidiaries of POWERCHINA, took part in the design and acceptance of the Ruzibazi Hydropower Station Project respectively.
During the construction stage, POWERCHINA has always attached great importance to the protection of its national and corporate image, made consistent refinements to its construction techniques, and overcome multiple challenges brought by complex geological conditions, prolonged land acquisition, and the COVID-19 epidemic.

The first and second generator units of the Ruzibazi Hydropower Station were completed and connected to the grid on May 1 and 23 respectively, winning full recognition from the Burundi government.
The construction of the Ruzibazi Hydropower Station has provided over 100 employment opportunities to local people. In addition, POWERCHINA has held several rounds of donation activities for nearby villagers.
The project, known as Burundi's "Three Gorges Reservoir", will increase the country's electricity supply by about one-third, relieve its shortage of power, improve industrial production, promote national economic development and optimize the living standards of local people.
