As the pump station gate opened and the pumps started at 11:06 local time on Dec 17, sewage flowed into the biochemical tank through the pretreatment system, marking the start of trial operation of the Dasher Kandi Sewage Treatment Plant in Bangladesh.
The Dasher Kandi sewage treatment plant is an entire industry chain project with its design, construction, operation and maintenance implemented by the Chinese general contractor PowerChina Chengdu Engineering Co., Ltd.
An important part of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor and the Belt and Road initiative, the project is the largest sewage treatment plant in South Asia and the first modern sewage plant in Bangladesh.

It is also the first mega international sewage treatment general contracting project implemented by POWERCHINA Chengdu Engineering Co., Ltd.
The sewage treatment project will help improve water quality in Dhaka and thereby the quality of life of the people, which is conducive to sustainable development of Bangladesh's economy, said Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Since the start of construction in August 2017, thanks to its advantages and experience in water projects, POWERCHINA Chengdu Engineering Co., Ltd overcame a number of unfavorable factors such as a Level 17 super cyclone storm in the Bay of Bengal and the COVID-19 pandemic, and managed to achieve its goal of trial operation by the end of 2021 as planned.

More efforts will be made in debugging, trial operation and remaining work areas to create conditions for the final smooth handover, said the company.
The Dasher Kandi Sewage Treatment Plant has a daily sewage treatment capacity of 500,000 tons. It was designed in accordance with Chinese high-quality standards and constructed with advanced technologies.
The livelihood project created around 1,000 local jobs, and when completed it will effectively lessen the increasingly serious river and environmental pollution in the Bangladash capital area
In addition, the project is expected to greatly enhance the influence of PowerChina in the water treatment sector overseas.
