A performance team of Huangyang Qianbian, a folk art that combines martial arts and dance, which has been inherited from Huangyang village, Yuding township, Zhongwei city, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, brought their dances to Handan, Hebei province, on June 14.
Dating back over 500 years, the art form is characterized by a fast-paced rhythm and bold and unrestrained movements. The art form was listed as part of China's national intangible cultural heritage in May 2021.
The prop whip used in this art form is made of hardwood, with a straight stick nearly 1 meter long and about 3 centimeters in diameter.
The costumes associated with this performance often embody a sense of heroic grandeur. Male performers are typically attired in traditional ancient-style waistbands and soft footwear, while women performers wear colorful garments and are complemented by decorative shoes.
The performance features 25 distinct movements and 24 intricate dance routines. The art form captures the spirit of locals of Huangyang village, characterized by their honesty, simplicity, strong work ethic, resilience, courage, and optimism.
