The electricity load of the cloud computing industry in Zhongwei, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, doubled year-on-year to reach 313,500 kilowatts, marking the acceleration of the transformation of this small western city from a desert city to a capital of computing power.
The China Unicom Zhongwei Cloud Data Center is an important piece of infrastructure as part of the "East Data, West Computing" project — one of the country's largest data infrastructure projects.
"The center has shifted from early storage businesses to the parallel development of storage and intelligent computing," said Qi Jun, project manager of the center's engineering construction department.
Electricity costs account for 60 to 70 percent of the total operating costs of data centers. Faced with the explosive growth of electricity demand, State Grid Zhongwei Power Supply Company has continued to collect project electricity demand and carried out grid planning and scheme formulation in advance.
"We have constructed 110 kV substations and switch stations to support the construction and operation of key computing power industry projects," said Yin Zhangui from the power supply company.
