Fenghua bamboo shoots (leishun) were recently designated a geographical indication (GI) product by the National Intellectual Property Administration.

Fenghua leishun refers to bamboo shoots produced in Xikou town, Fenghua district, Ningbo.

This is the fifth GI trademark Fenghua has obtained, following its honey peaches, taros, flaky pastry and quhao, a local variety of green tea. 

GI is a label given to products that have a specific geographic origin and possess certain qualities or a reputation related to that origin.

The plantation of bamboo shoots in Xikou town dates back to the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).

Leishun literally means "thunder bamboo shoots". Its name alludes to the fact that bamboo shoots grow fast during the Awakening of Insects, the third solar term in the lunar year when spring thunder occurs frequently.

Fenghua leishun are crispy, fresh and sweet, and high in water content. The local plantation occupies 3066 hectares in Xikou, with an annual output of 45,000 metric tons of fresh bamboo shoots, which are worth about 350 million yuan ($52 million), accounting for about one-third of the total agricultural output value of the region.

Farmers are able to utilize the trademark after obtaining authorization. Those who, without permission, use the same or similar trademarks will be prosecuted for legal liability.
