In recent years, Haimen district in Nantong, Jiangsu province, has made significant strides in improving its environment, leading to a remarkable enhancement in biodiversity within the region.

Based on the latest data from the previous comprehensive biodiversity survey in Haimen and fixed biodiversity observations in 2023, a total of 1,185 species have been recorded in the area.

Last year, the Haimen ecological environment bureau commissioned the biodiversity team from the Academy of Environmental Planning and Design Co Ltd under Nanjing University to conduct long-term fixed observations at the Liyashan coastal mudflats and Coastal Forest Park.

As one of the 13 important outdoor observation sites in the observation network of Nantong, this site has defined observation scopes and groups, marking a significant breakthrough in establishing basic biodiversity observation facilities in Haimen.

During this round of fixed observations, the bird observation results were particularly noteworthy, with a total of 86 avian species recorded— 22 additional species recorded compared to the number found in the previous biodiversity survey.

Of special mention is the sighting of an individual Chinese Egret within the Liyashan National Marine Park during the 2023 autumn migration period. This species is not only nationally protected, but is also a globally recognized rare bird. It is classified as a vulnerable species in both the Chinese Biodiversity Red List and the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, making it one of the most challenging egret species to observe and record.

The increasing richness in biodiversity can be attributed to Haimen's efforts in combating environmental pollution. In recent years, Haimen has invested 1.34 billion yuan ($184.70 million) to facilitate the closure and relocation of 32 chemical production enterprises within a 1-kilometer range along the river. Additionally, 30 billion yuan has been allocated to revitalize and reshape the overall appearance of riverside coastal areas.

Furthermore, Haimen has been actively promoting ecological protection, restoration, and governance, facilitating the organic connection of various functional areas such as green spaces, wetlands, and ecological reserves to promote the harmonious coexistence of urban development and nature.
