Tongzhou district in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, was recently designated as a national demonstration district for science popularization, according to a government conference held on Feb 15.

The district is the only national demonstration district for science popularization in the city.

In addition, the Zhou Ji Green Expo Garden in Tongzhou was designated as a national education base for science popularization at the conference.

These achievements were made possible by the efforts taken by Tongzhou authorities to promote popular science over the past years.

In 2004 and 2007, the district made the list of national demonstration cities for science popularization.

In 2008, the district established a national "excellent activity station" for science popularization, the only one in Jiangsu province.

The district is currently home to more than 500 district-level demonstration stations for science popularization and two national education bases.

Zhou Ji Green Expo Garden, as one of the national education bases, boasts 160,000 plants, about 6,000 of which are rare.

Since 2013, the garden has been conferred the title of Jiangsu provincial education base for science popularization every year.
