Tongzhou district of Nantong, East China’s Jiangsu province, has been making steady progress in its transformation into an eco-friendly city through efforts to control air pollution and treat its water sources since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012.
Last year, the proportion of days with good air quality climbed to 87.9 percent in Tongzhou, the best in Nantong.
In 2021, the quality of 15 samples of surface water in the district was classified as Grade III, the third-highest level in a five-tier quality system for water in China.
Nanshanhu Park in Tongzhou's Chengdong New Area is one location that exemplifies the district's efforts to raise the level of livability.
Built on a barren wasteland a decade ago, the park now houses a scenic waterfront area and has more than 200,000 square meters of greenery.
Presently, more than 50 parks, plazas, and gardens that are accessible to citizens within a 10-minute walk have been established in Tongzhou, official statistics show.
