Qian Wangwei from Qidong – a county-level city in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province – will compete as a cyclist in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games to be held from Aug 25 till Sept 5.
Qian will compete in the Women's C1 3000m individual pursuit, women's C1 individual 500m time trial, women's C-grade road individual time trial, and women's C-grade road group race.
"This is my first time participating in the Paralympic Games. I'll be looking to win medals and set some personal records," Qian said in an interview before the competition.
Qian, 27, was born in Funan village, Haifu town with congenital cerebral palsy and suffers hand and feet deformities. In 2014, however, she was selected to join the Jiangsu provincial cycling team for those with physical impairments, which officially launched her career as an athlete.
That same year, she broke several records at the Jiangsu provincial games for the disabled and demonstrated considerable talent.
Since then, Qian has brought her team honor in various national and international sporting arenas, winning a gold medal in the 10th national games for the disabled in 2018 and clinching four golds at the 2020 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships held in Canada the same year.
Qian became the first athlete from Nantong to win the world-class para-cycling championships.
