Yu Dongjuan became the first person to establish a family farm in Qidong – a county-level city in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province – in 2014. In the following year, she was selected as a national model worker.
Since then, Yu has been engaged in many programs for the public good, including participating in an activity in which model workers were invited to encourage their students to develop a passion for labor.
Since children these days have become delicate snowflakes and struggle with strenuous work, Yu decided to use her family farm to remedy this and provide opportunities for children to work with crops at a young age.
On June 12, a group of children from Juexin Kindergarten took part in an educational activity together with their parents on Yu's farm.
Yu talked with the children and parents and said that the activity was meant to give children have a better understanding of farming and that she hoped it would contribute to China's agricultural development.
The children were taught to transplant rice on their own, and visited a rice production workshop. By directly participating in seeding and witnessing the rice production process, the children gained a new appreciation for food.
