A company in Rudong county, Nantong recently finalized an order of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from South Korea – making it the first in China to do so.

This was the first time China imported ISO tank container LNG, which is built to the ISO standard (International Organization for Standardization), from South Korea and the first time South Korea exported the material. It was also the first such order to be handled through the national energy trading platform.

The 28.8-ton ISO tank container LNG was shipped to Qingdao Port from South Korea within 24 hours. The short distance between the two countries and their experience with LNG make South Korea and China excellent partners in the LNG industry.

The ISO tank container is mainly used to transport liquid goods, such as wine, oils, liquid food, and chemicals. It is more convenient, more ecofriendly, and safer than the traditional ways of transporting liquid freight.

Though only a limited volume was shipped, the new transportation model is expected to serve as a convenient alternative to traditional methods. It will also expand the LNG supply network and strengthen energy security.

Yangkou Port, where the company is based, is focusing on clean energy and playing a significant role in the transportation of LNG. The ISO tank container LNG market shows promise, and the company plans to develop a full industrial chain around it by taking advantage of Yangkou Port's LNG energy center.
