When Japanese kerria (Kerria japonica) flowers bloom, their bright and beautiful presence captivates all. Since the pre-Qin period (before 221 BC), this flower has symbolized brotherly affection.

The Dihua Pavilion at the palace was named after this flower, reflecting the wish of Emperor Daoguang (r. 1820-1850) for his successor the Emperor Xianfeng (r. 1851-1861) and his sixth son Yixin (1833-1898) to work together to bring prosperity to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

The East Hill and the West Hill at the Garden of Gathered Splendor stand out as the prime locations to enjoy these flowers, especially during the peak blooming season from April to June.

The West Hill, adorned with peculiar rocks, meandering pathways, and vibrant blossoms, is an ideal place for a bird's-eye view of the renowned Rectangular Pond and Pavilion, celebrated for its resplendent lotus flowers in mid-summer.
