The Ledao Hall, which served as the residence of Princess Hexiao(1775-1823)in the mid-Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and Prince Kung Yixin (1833-1898) in the late Qing Dynasty, is a premier location to enjoy magnolias and lilacs.

The hall was named by Yixin to commemorate his father, Emperor Daoguang (r. 1820-1850), who inscribed the plaque with the same name for Yixin's abode at the Summer Palace prior to becoming prince.

Another splendid viewing spot is the Second Gate of the palace. The gate features three doors with the central one reserved for the host and distinguished guests, and the two side ones for those of lesser social status.

This unique area was historically loosely referred to as the "Cross-shaped Courtyard" (Shizi yuan in Chinese) on maps dating back to the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

The peak flowering period for magnolias occurs from late March to April, while lilacs burst into full bloom from mid-April to mid-May.
