Suanzhi wood armchair inlaid with marble panels

Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)

The armchair typifies the style of late Qing Dynasty furniture. 

It is made of suanzhi wood, also known as hongmu wood. The back panel of the chair features an interlocking frame with intricately carved motifs and a circular openwork design at the center, where a round marble panel is embedded. On both sides of the round panel are carved ruyi and grape motifs in openwork. A square marble panel is inlaid in each of the armrests. 

Beneath the seat are beaded curvilinear aprons and a rectangular apron carved in openwork with ruyi and grape motifs at the front, supported by legs with eagle-claw shaped feet.
