The coastal Lin-gang Special Area – located in East China's Shanghai city – has prepared 16 temporary shelters for residents in case of flooding that could be caused by typhoon In-Fa, which is approaching the coastal areas of eastern China.

The center of In-Fa, the sixth typhoon this year, was located in the Pacific Ocean, 670 kilometers away from Xiangshan county, Ningbo, Zhejiang province and the wind level near the center of the typhoon was 14 as of 9 am on July 23. It will move northwest at a speed of 15 km/h and gradually increase in strength. It is forecast to lash Lin-gang with strong winds and heavy rains from this evening, in particular its coastal areas.

The Lin-gang Special Area – located at the intersection of Hangzhou Bay and the mouth of the Yangtze River – has braced for possible flooding.

It has lowered the water level of Dishui Lake – the largest artificial lake in the area – and cleared fallen leaves from drainage and manhole outlets. It has also launched rounds of inspections and eliminated 161 safety risks relating to outdoor signage, drainage systems, underground venues and others.

As an emerging area, Lin-gang currently has 382 construction sites employing 26,951 workers. As part of its safety preparations, it has reinforced structures and dismantled some scaffolding to prevent falling objects.

The 16 temporary shelters are able to accommodate 13,300 people. Security, medical care and other services are being made available in the shelters. Some sites – including Shanghai Maritime University, Shanghai Dianji University and Shanghai Jian Qiao University – will also provide air-conditioned spaces and meals for people.
