Recognized as Asia's largest fresh-cut flower trading market, the Dounan Flower Market is pivotal in the flower industry. Nestled on the eastern shores of Dianchi Lake in Kunming, Yunnan province, this market is a crucial hub for flower distribution.
On Feb 17, the last day of the Spring Festival holiday, the Dounan Flower Market was still bustling with activity. Stalls were filled with a variety of colorful blooms such as water lilies, sunflowers, roses, gypsophila, and lilies, attracting crowds of tourists. Visitors took photos, selected flowers and packaged bouquets as souvenirs.
"When you come to Yunnan, fresh flowers are definitely the characteristic souvenirs we bring back. Our whole family came to Yunnan for the Lunar New Year, and we specifically chose Dounan as our last stop, buying six types of fresh flowers to mail back," said Yang Jun, 62, from Nantong, Jiangsu province. Yang Jun and his family spent over four hours at the Dounan Flower Market that day, taking photos and selecting fresh-cut flowers.
Its New Year flower exhibition area covering an area of over 300 square meters, showcased fresh-cut flowers that impressed many visitors. Jin Taiyu, the person in charge of the exhibition area, has been engaged in flower planting and sales for many years. Jin introduced that the more than 100 varieties of roses currently on sale are excellent varieties bred through independent hybridization at their flower base.
Zhang Xian, the publicity director of Yunnan Dounan Flower Industry Group, stated that during this year's 8-day Spring Festival holiday , the sales volume of fresh-cut flowers and the number of visitors to the Dounan Flower Market have seen a dramatic increase. From Feb 9 to 17, nearly 300,000 visitors came to the market to purchase fresh-cut flowers, with an average daily footfall exceeding 35,000 people. This significant increase in traffic has greatly boosted the transaction volume of fresh-cut flowers.
With the upcoming Lantern Festival, International Women's Day, Mother's Day, and other festivals and celebrations, Dounan envisions peak seasons in transactions, auctions, and online sales.
