Kunming received the title of "2023 Meteorological Tourism City" and was selected as a typical case of 2023 popular meteorological tourism online at the second China Meteorological Tourism Industry Development Conference on Dec 19.
The China Meteorological Tourism Development Report (2023) released during the conference awarded the title of "Meteorological Tourism City" to Kunming and nine other cities among 60 regions featuring characteristic meteorological tourism resources. In addition, Kunming was chosen as a typical case of a livable wellness resort with a moderate temperature.
According to Qu Ya, secretary-general of the China Meteorological Service Association, meteorological tourism, as an emerging intersection of meteorological resources and the tourism industry, is the fastest growing and most dynamic development direction in the tourism industry, whose resources include sunrise, thunderstorms, starry skies, deserts, ice and snow, rime and rainforests.
As the famous "city of eternal spring" worldwide, Kunming attracts tourists from all over the world every year with its warm sunshine, fresh air and blooming flowers. From January to November this year, Kunming received over 261 million tourists, a year-on-year increase of 27.71%, and generated tourism revenue of over 360 billion yuan (about $50.37 billion), a year-on-year increase of 39.48%.
In recent years, Kunming has transformed its valuable meteorological resources into tourism, ecological and economic resources to promote socio-economic development. The Kunming Culture and Tourism Bureau has continued to launch tourism products, such as hot springs, wetlands and marathons, in the fields of health, ecology and sports. At the same time, efforts have been made to strengthen marketing promotion by shaping the city's image as a paradise for summer and winter holidays, health care and sports, in a bid to attract more tourists and revitalize the local economy, realizing the leap into high-quality development of the culture and tourism industry.
