In recent years, through continuously strengthened protection, an increasing number of Asian elephants has been seen living in Mohan town, with 74 elephants at its peak.
In order to protect people’s lives and property and promote the harmonious coexistence between human and elephants, Mohan town has taken multiple measures in Asian elephant monitoring and early warning, accident investigation, and publicity and guidance.
Two Asian elephant monitors and one staff member of the town's forestry service center follow up and track Asian elephants every day.
The monitors track the elephants using a combination of UAVs and ground tracking. As soon as the movement trajectory of an Asian elephant is confirmed, the monitors will notify nearby villagers.
Temporary traffic control will be on the highway and in other key areas as an Asian elephant approaches, and at the same time, the villagers will be reminded to reasonably arrange work and travel time according to information on Asian elephant activity provided by the monitors, in order to prevent head-on conflicts with Asian elephants, building a harmonious atmosphere between human and elephants.
Mohan town also continues to publicize the compensation standards for Asian elephant accidents to the public, and relevant staff will be arranged to investigate the scene as soon as possible if Asian elephants cause casualties, damage crops or other property losses, and will make up for any losses to the greatest extent. The insurance funds for wild animal public liability insurance continue to increase, steadily improving the insured scope.
Mohan town also attaches great importance to the publicity and guidance of Asian elephant protection and management. The town government has held village meetings and activities to publicize Asian elephant protection and safety precautions, as well as to improve everyone's awareness of elephant protection and promote a harmonious coexistence between villagers and Asian elephants.
