As the largest flower market in Asia and the second-largest in the world, the Dounan market in Kunming, Yunnan province, serves as a barometer for the Chinese flower market.
In 2021, the market traded over 10.26 billion flowers worth 11.24 billion yuan ($1.77 billion). It has had the highest trade volume, value, and export of fresh-cut flowers in China for 23 consecutive years.
Now, more than 80 percent of fresh-cut flowers in Yunnan province are traded in Dounan. It provides flowers to 70 percent of the nation’s market, as well as exports to more than 50 countries and regions.
Peng Guotai, a flower dealer, said: "Shanghai, Beijing, and Hailar in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region are my main buyers, although I also get orders from other places in China.”
The market saw dramatic price increases ahead of Valentine's Day and Lantern Festival. Flower dealers stocked up and sales of flowers at the Dounan market surged, with flower prices soaring to their highest level in nearly a decade.
Wang Shouhai, head of flower auction department: “The price of flowers has been rising daily since Feb 3, and so has the transaction volume. The trade peaked on Feb 9, when the price per stem went up to 4.1 yuan, 2-2.5 times higher than last year.”
As of Feb 3, the daily auction volume of fresh-cut flowers in the Dounan market had reached 4.83 million. For every 10 roses in the national fresh-cut flower market, at least seven come from Dounan. Watch the video and enjoy the festive atmosphere with China Daily!
