Liu Zhonghan, born in Wuhan, Hubei province, also known by his pen name Zhong Han, is a witness to the story of Kuliang.

In 1985, he went to study at the University of California, Davis, the US, where he met the widow of Lee Gardner, thus becoming involved in Gardner's story in China. In 1992, under the pen name Zhong Han, he published an article titled Ah, Kuliang! in the People's Daily. Upon the publication of this article, Gardner's wife was invited to visit Fuzhou in August of that year, with Liu accompanying her.
