Three college students from East China’s Jiangsu province were recently recognized for their abilities in mathematical modeling at a competition held by the US-based Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

The team of Li Jiacheng, Cao Han and Huang Biao from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NJUPT), were individually judged “Outstanding” in the 2017 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and granted SIAM awards.

Each of them will also be given $500 and a one-year student membership in SIAM.

NJUPT is the first university in Jiangsu to receive the honor of holding the championship, which in previous years were usually “encroached” by leading universities like Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tsinghua University.

Other students from the Jiangsu university also did well, winning 21 first prizes and 40 second prizes, a contribution to the school’s most glorious results in MCM so far.

The results were a great step forward since the university won China’s mathematical contest in modeling for college students in 2015.

One of the most powerful science contests for college students in the world, MCM was established in 1985, testing teams of three on continuous and discrete problems.

Every year, teams of college students from all over the globe participate in the contest.

This year’s contest attracted some 9,000 teams from 13 countries, including China, the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

A team from North Carolina State University in the US joined the Jiangsu team in being named “Outstanding Winners”.
