In the Taixing Economic Development Zone – located in Taixing city, in East China's Jiangsu province – the underwater engineering of sewage gates for three rivers running into the Yangtze River was recently completed.
The scheme is a bid to prevent and control water pollution in the Yangtze River.
With the completion of the gate stations, in the event of a sewage overflow, the zone can immediately close the inflows of the river courses.
This will prevent sewage from entering the Yangtze or overflowing into other river courses, reducing the risk of more accidents.
Officials said the zone will establish a linkage prevention and control system operating the intelligent control of the sewage interception gate stations, the gate stations along the Yangtze River and the emergency gate for accidents in the zone.
It will thereby control and eliminate sudden water source pollution incidents, said Bai Xuejun, deputy director of the zone's management committee.
The sewage interception gate stations not only intercept polluted water sources, but also have the function of flood control and drainage, maintaining river water levels and stabilizing riverbanks.
